Born in Moscow, Mr. Pronin can trace his musical lineage to the great school of Odessa trained violinists. His first teacher was his grandfather, Veniamin Pronin, who was a professor of violin at the Odessa Conservatory and a pupil of the renowned pedagogue Pyotr Stoliarsky, teacher of David Oistrakh and Nathan Milstein. Among his grandfather’s close friends and colleagues were violinist Leonid Kogan, pianist Emil Gilels and the great Russian composer Dmitry Shostakovich.
Having begun his violin studies at the age of 8, Mr. Pronin made his debut in Netanya, Israel at the age of 10, and by the age of 14 had given numerous solo and chamber recitals in Israel, the United States, and Europe. While appearing at the International Music Festival at Galicia, Spain his playing came to the attention of the world-renowned Professor of Violin Nelli Shkolnikova who subsequently invited Mr. Pronin to study with her at Indiana University (IU).
Despite his very young age, his performance immediately earned him top 1% ranking at IU, as well as full scholarship support. After Professor Shkolnikova’s retirement, Mr. Pronin continued his studies at IU with the internationally-renowned Professor of Violin Jaime Laredo and, in 2009, was awarded the prestigious Performance Certificate – the highest performance award given by Indiana University. Mr. Pronin also received artistic tutelage from Miriam Fried, Zakhar Bron, Pamela Frank, Peter Oundjian, Joel Smirnoff and Pinchas Zukerman.
Mr. Pronin maintains a busy performance and recording schedule. His performances range from solos with orchestras to solo and chamber recitals worldwide. He has performed in many music festivals and concert venues, including Dekelboum Hall in Washington, D.C.; Carnegie Hall and the Miller Theatre in New York City; the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, Canada; Rathaussaal Forchheim in Nuremberg, Germany and the Perlman Theatre in Philadelphia. He has frequently performed on television and radio in the United States, Canada, Europe and Israel, including live broadcasts of the Interlochen Public Radio Station and the Chicago Classical Radio station. He has performed under the baton of many eminent conductors such as Ronald Zollman, Herbert Blomstedt and Leonard Slatkin. Mr. Pronin is also an avid chamber musician, and has engaged in chamber music with internationally-renowned musicians such as James Campbell, Mark Kaplan, Orion String Quartet, Anton Nel, Emille Naoumoff and Jaime Laredo.
Mr. Pronin is the recipient of multiple awards from the American String Teachers Association, America-Israel Cultural Foundation, Canada Council for the Arts and Classical Artists Development Foundation. Most recently, Mr. Pronin was appointed “Artist in Residence” at the College of Fine Arts, University of Texas at Austin.
Mr. Pronin maintains a large repertoire ranging in scope and variety from early Baroque to the 21st century.
